Introduction: Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) were until very recently perceived to be safe, effective and inexpensive. As a result they are widely prescribed empirically, beyond their core indications. However dose-dependent adverse reactions increasingly reported include diarrhoea, resistant hypomagnesaemia/hypocalcaemia and interstitial nephritis.
